The United States Department of Justice has successfully secured $3,958,060.84 for the remission of a Walmart gift card scam that dates back to 2015. As reported by Top Class Actions, the scam began when fraudsters directed victims to purchase Walmart gift cards with values ranging between $500 and $1,000.

Walmart took action against the fraudulent scheme by freezing the balances on suspected gift cards between 2016 and 2017. The Department of Justice then sought to obtain these frozen funds to reimburse affected customers. A lawsuit was filed for the forfeiture of the $3,958,060.84 in gift card balances held by Walmart, and the funds have now been made available for compensation payments.

Eligible recipients of the compensation are consumers who purchased Walmart gift cards between April 1, 2016, and July 31, 2017, as a result of the scam. The referral payment will be determined based on the amount loaded onto the gift cards, and any previous payments received from banks or other sources will be deducted from the final compensation. However, it is important to note that the compensation will not cover any collateral expenses associated with the scheme.

To request payment from Walmart, affected consumers who purchased gift cards between the specified dates must file a claim for the funds. The deadline for submitting a claim form is June 29, 2023. Customers are required to provide documentation that proves their purchase of the gift cards in question. Individuals who do not qualify for compensation are advised not to file a claim.
